During former Governor Brown’s last year in office, 1,217 bills reached the Governor’s Desk by the conclusion of the 2018 Legislative Session. In his first year in office, Governor Newsom will have received 1,037 bills by the conclusion of the 2019 Legislative Session.
In 2018, out of 2,225 bills introduced (Senate – 694; Assembly – 1,531), 55% of the bills introduced made it to the Governor’s Desk. 45% of the bills introduced got signed into law, while 9% of the bills introduced got vetoed.
In 2018, Governor Brown received over 900 bills during the final month of Session. Over 300 bills were acted upon prior to the Legislature’s adjournment. In 2019, Governor Newsom will receive roughly 740 bills during the final month of session. Newsom will be getting 344 Senate Bills and 693 Assembly Bills. Just shy of 300 bills were acted upon prior to the Legislature adjourning for the year on September 14.
In 2019, there were 2,177 bill introductions at the deadline for the 2019 Legislative Session (Assembly – 1,505; Senate – 672). Based upon bill introductions the past two years, they were roughly equal. Almost 48% of the bills introduced in 2019 made it to the Governor’s Desk.
Governor Newsom has until October 13 to act upon those 740 bills that will reach his desk. We’ll check back afterwards to review how many measures he signed and vetoed.
